Public Works Director Marty Martin explained that the GDOT LMIG safety program targets low‑cost countermeasures (for example, pavement markings, raised pavement markers and certain pedestrian devices) and that Sandy Springs was eligible for up to $400,000 under the program if projects met GDOT’s criteria. Staff identified several candidate arterial/collector streets with fair or poor striping — including Dupree Drive, Glenridge Connector, Northland Drive, Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Spalding Drive — and proposed applying for $32,462 in GDOT funds to refresh pavement marking work under the city’s existing annual pavement marking contract. The local match required by GDOT is 30%, which was estimated at $9,738 and gives a total estimated program cost of about $42,200.
Doctor Melody Kelly moved to approve the submittal and the required local match; Councilmember Jody Rochelle seconded. Council passed the submittal authorization by voice vote. Martin said work would be procured under the city’s pavement markings maintenance contract and that the application deadline to GDOT was June 4.
The council vote authorizes staff to seek the GDOT funds and obligates the city to provide the local match should the application be successful.
