VDH presents ACSA with 2024 Silver Award for filtration and backwash excellence

The Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water presented the Amherst County Service Authority with the 2024 Silver Award for excellence in filtration and backwash, Thomas Thompson, deputy field director of the Lexington office, said at the meeting.
Thompson said the award recognizes systems that met both performance goals of less than 0.1 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) 95% of the time for all 12 months. “The Virginia Department of Health Office of Drinking Water would like to present ACSA with the 2024 silver award and excellence in filtration and backwash,” Thompson said, adding that, in the Lexington area, 12 of 26 participating systems earned silver or higher and that statewide 72 of 121 systems met both goals.
ACSA staff invited plant operators forward to receive the award; staff and the deputy field director thanked the operators for their work in maintaining the system’s filtration performance. No policy action accompanied the presentation; the award recognized operational performance documented by the state regulator.
Thompson and staff emphasized the award as recognition of daily operational work that protects customers served by the public water system.
