Redmond seeks King County certification for Marymore Village and Southeast Redmond manufacturing center

City planning staff asked the City Council to authorize applications to King County seeking countywide center certification for Marymore Village and a countywide manufacturing/industrial center in Southeast Redmond, saying the certifications would implement the Redmond 2050 comprehensive plan and open new regional funding and planning opportunities.
"In the Redmond 2050 comprehensive plan, the countywide centers play an important role in providing opportunities for jobs, housing, recreation," said Becky Fry, senior planning staff, who joined Deputy Director Sarah Fee Allen and Lauren Alpert at the dais. Fry said Marymore Village is transitioning from a local center to a countywide center and that the Southeast Redmond manufacturing center would support access to living-wage jobs and play a key role in the county economy.
Staff said the countywide certification process requires Redmond's authorization to proceed and that King County applications are due Oct. 1. Fry noted the Southeast Redmond market study contract was on the committee's consent agenda and that the city would submit materials to King County as part of the certification process.
Council member Nueva Camino asked for a plain-language distinction between local and countywide centers. Lauren Alpert responded that countywide center designation aligns a location with King Countywide Planning Policies and can provide different grant opportunities; Alpert clarified that the designation does not remove local jurisdiction over land use decisions.
Council President Kritzker noted she serves on King County's Growth Management Planning Council and said she would represent Redmond in shepherding the certification through the county process. The council offered no objection to placing authorization on the June 17 consent agenda.
