Selectmen approve acquisition of 1978 Dodge federal surplus pickup for town use

The Board of Selectmen authorized Fire Chief Tom Blanchett to acquire a federal-excess-property 1978 Dodge three-quarter-ton pickup through the Federal Excess Property Cooperative Agreement.
Blanchett said the vehicle would serve as a utility truck for dump runs and similar tasks after the department eliminated a prior utility vehicle. He explained the town had difficulty finding a suitable low-cost vehicle on the surplus market within reasonable distance; this pickup was recently turned in by another New Hampshire town and was available at Bear Brook.
Selectman Miller moved to allow the chief to acquire the vehicle (serial W24BE7SR5090037 as described in meeting notes), noting the truck is an older, "old school" vehicle that may lack power steering and power brakes. Blanchett said the truck runs and would be suitable for short utility tasks; if mechanical failures prove too costly, the town can return the vehicle to the surplus program. The motion was seconded and carried by roll-call voice vote.
The board discussed minimal expected costs and local vendor support for repairs. Blanchett said the pickup would not be heavily converted or marked beyond items already available for reuse; it will primarily be used for transfer-station and dump runs.
The approved action lets the fire chief complete the federal-surplus acquisition and sign the cooperative paperwork; the vehicle remains federal property until formally transferred under the cooperative agreement.
