Resident asks about lead testing after Altadena fires; staff says no tests yet, will research county guidance

A South Pasadena resident raised questions at the start of the Community Services Commission meeting about whether park sand was being tested for lead and other contaminants following fires in Altadena, citing practices in neighboring cities.
The resident, identified in the public comment queue as a South Pasadena resident, said she had learned of surrounding cities’ testing and expressed concern about simply adding clean sand on top of contaminated material. She asked whether any South Pasadena parks, such as Orange Grove, had undergone testing and how the public would be informed of results.
Community Services staff replied that the city has not tested park sand following the recent fires and that the city generally follows guidance from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Melissa Snyder told the commission there had been no LA County recommendation to test at the time and that the city had in some places placed new sand on top of existing material. Commissioners asked staff to research county actions and return with any updates; staff agreed to research from now until the next meeting and share any updates from the county with the commission.
No testing results or remediation plans were announced at the meeting.
