Middlesex moves to advertise ordinance for one-time employee bonuses

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors on June 3 authorized the county attorney to advertise a draft ordinance to provide one-time monetary bonuses to county employees, with formal consideration and a public hearing planned for the July 8 meeting.
The proposed ordinance would authorize a one-time $700 payment to full-time county employees (based on June 2025 salaries) and a 1.5% payment for full-time constitutional officers’ compensation-board-funded positions (based on the state compensation board funding). The proposal also includes a formula for part-time workers as described by staff.
County Attorney and staff presented the draft ordinance and asked for permission to advertise it; Supervisor Bill Harris moved to authorize advertisement and Supervisor Wayne Jesse seconded. The motion passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
Staff noted that surrounding counties have taken different approaches: Gloucester County planned a similar bonus as of the meeting, and several neighboring counties (Mathews, King and Queen, King William, Lancaster and Northumberland) had not opted to provide the payment at that time. The board will consider public comment and any updated county or state guidance when it takes final action at the July hearing.
The authorization to advertise does not itself provide funding; it places the ordinance on the July agenda for a public hearing and final board decision.
