Morgan County commissioners approved Ordinance CO-25-12 on June 3 to increase the county’s transient room (lodging) tax to 4.5 percent. Commissioners discussed the measure’s role in supporting tourism promotion and county services that serve visitors; supporters said the tax is charged to lodging customers and helps fund tourism marketing, facility improvements and visitor-related services.
The ordinance passed at the June 3 meeting; county staff will update billing systems and notify local lodging operators of the change so the new rate can be collected and remitted. Commissioners noted the tax does not change the county’s food sales tax exemption and that the lodging tax is charged only to overnight visitors and not to groceries.
No additional implementing appropriation was taken at the meeting; staff will include any resulting revenue in future budget planning and directed accounting staff to update procedures for collection and remittance.
