Champaign County facilities staff: Pope Jail roof bids look competitive; opening scheduled June 12

"The bid's actually going pretty well. We met with them this past week. Had, I think, 3, if not 4 vendors show up, but it was not a mandatory walk through," a facilities staff member said. The staff member said they would likely forward a recommendation to the chair and then to the full board for review after the public bid opening.
Committee member Stephanie asked whether replacing the roof would affect jail operations. The staff member said they plan to limit disruption by arranging contractor access from the outside rather than routing through secure interior spaces, which would otherwise require repeated tool check-ins and interrupt operations.
Because the Facilities Committee does not meet in July, staff said they will send their recommendation to the chair and the full County Board after the bid opening rather than waiting for a committee meeting.
No formal vote or contract award occurred at the meeting; the presentation was informational and staff said next steps include reviewing bids after the June 12 opening.
