Drivers report flats on Dundee Road; village gives construction schedule and contact guidance

A resident and local excavation-business owner told the Village of Wheeling Board of Trustees on June 2 that debris from recent Dundee Road construction had caused two flat tires, and he urged the village to hold contractors accountable.
“There's a clear difference between everyday mess and hazardous debris being left, you know, putting drivers at risk,” Stephen Kale said during public comment.
Public Works staffer Mr. Kaup told trustees the work on Dundee Road is the local water-main portion of a larger project that will be followed by the state’s repaving. He said the village will move a planned intersection closure at Dundee and Elmhurst to the Thursday after the June 2 meeting to accommodate detour setup and the local water-main installation before the state resurfaces the roadway.
Kaup gave a step-by-step outline of the forthcoming work: saw-cutting to install the new pipe; pipe installation over a Saturday-to-Monday span he described in the meeting; trench preparation and rebar installation on the following Tuesday; and concrete capping on the subsequent Wednesday. He said the contractor was given a 12-day period by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and that staff do not expect to need the full period. He also said the local water-main work could be completed and the roadway reopened for the state to begin resurfacing after the Fourth of July weekend.
Kaup confirmed the road is a state route but described the water-main portion as “our construction project.” He told trustees the village aims to have the roadway open by June 17 in the worst-case timeline and said the larger project should be finished by the end of the month, with the state’s resurfacing to follow.
When Trustee Eufado asked where a motorist should call after hours if they believe damage came from the construction zone, Kaup said residents should call the police nonemergency number; the call will be routed through Northwest Central Dispatch to the village on-call person for nonemergency issues.
Kale, who said he owns an excavation company and had spoken with neighbors who experienced similar tire damage, asked officials to ensure contractors maintain the roadway. Kaup said he would follow up with the project’s general contractor.
No vote or formal board action was taken on the matter during the meeting.
