Public commenter urges help for residents flagged by MVD verification glitch

At the Board of Supervisors’ call to the public, Erin Miller of Virginia County Reporters said the county and residents were working to fix a Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) verification issue that had caused some Arizona residents to be flagged as lacking proof of citizenship.
Miller said the problem does not mean people are not citizens but that the MVD could not verify citizenship in some records. She said county election staff mailed letters, posted on Facebook and were asking residents to provide documentation such as birth certificates, Tribal ID or traveler's identification to clear their records before the next election.
Miller told the board that the outreach included a mailed letter the morning of the meeting and that residents could call county offices for assistance. The board did not take formal action during the meeting on the item; election staff later presented an agenda item approving an election equipment purchase and said HAVA funds and election funds would cover it.
