Commissioners direct HR to fill full-time emergency management role after county failed Fermi drill

Monroe County commissioners voted May 21 to instruct the human resources department to pursue hiring a qualified full-time director for the Emergency Management Department (EMD) after officials said the county did not pass a Fermi nuclear-plant drill last fall and faces a more rigorous exercise on June 24.
A commissioner who raised the item said first responders and other stakeholders reported concerns about coordination and preparedness since the county has operated with a part-time interim director. That commissioner urged HR to expedite work to ensure a full-time, qualified candidate is in place well before the June 24 drill.
Board members said failing a Fermi drill can affect grant eligibility and the county’s ability to meet licensure and partnership obligations with the Fermi plant. Commissioners noted EMD coordinates with 911, police, sheriff, volunteer fire departments and other response partners; several members urged swift action to restore full-time leadership.
The motion to direct HR to look into filling the EMD director position passed on roll call. Commissioners recorded unanimous support during the roll call conducted after discussion.
