Kent County health director outlines inspections, clinical services and program cuts

Dr. Adam London, speaking for the Kent County Health Department, briefed the Kent County Board of Commissioners on the department’s 2024 operations and ongoing priorities, highlighting accreditation, workforce turnover, inspection volumes, clinical services and the near-term loss of some grant-funded programs.

The presentation emphasized why the county’s public-health operations matter to residents: environmental inspections, clinic visits, vaccinations and disease surveillance all underpin routine safety and prevention. “I’m happy to announce that a couple of weeks ago we received that accreditation from the National Association of City and County Health Officials,” London said, referring to the department’s national emergency-preparedness recognition.

London reported workforce and staffing figures and called attention to turnover. He said the department’s full-time equivalent staff is “about 270,” roughly 10% of county employment. He also said turnover in the public-health workforce has been large: “In our own department, it’s about half,” he said, describing a national turnover trend he placed near 47% since about 2017–2018.
