The proclamation, read by Zane Jacobs, CEO and president of Flagstaff Pride, affirms the board’s support for visibility and equal opportunity for LGBTQIA+ individuals and notes national milestones cited in the text. “Coconino County is committed to strengthening visibility, respect, [and] equal opportunity for LGBTQIA+ individuals in our diverse community,” Jacobs read during the meeting.
The measure passed on a voice vote, 4–1. Chair Patrice Horstman, Supervisor Judy Begay and other board members offered comments in support. Supervisor Jeronimo Vasquez said, “Pride month is a time to celebrate love, courage, and the freedom to live true to who we are.” Supervisor Fowler and Supervisor Tammy Ontiveros also spoke about the county’s commitment to protecting civil rights; Begay thanked the community and described the proclamation as an expression of countywide support.
Board members and staff described planned county events tied to Pride Month. County staff announced a series of lunchtime presentations—one on the Stonewall uprising and others focusing on stories of older LGBTQ residents and athletes—and invited the board and the public to participate.
While the proclamation is a formal county statement of support, board members emphasized that proclamations do not create new legal rights or county programs. The board directed staff to publicize Pride Month events and to continue coordination with community organizations.
The board took the action during its regular June 3 meeting and later posed for a group photo with Flagstaff Pride representatives. County staff said additional publicity and event invitations will be shared on the county website and by email.
