City staff presented proposed changes to the City of Green Bay mayor’s salary for the term beginning in 2027 at the Personnel Committee meeting on June 3; after discussion the committee voted unanimously to send the proposal back to staff for more information and comparables.
Staff materials included a list of municipal comparables and a recommended baseline increase; committee members noted the agenda packet had been amended the previous day and requested additional data. Committee members asked staff to provide clearer comparables (population, whether the jurisdiction uses a mayor or an administrator, and whether the compared positions are full-time or part-time) and to include benefits information, which the staff presentation had excluded. Committee members also discussed an option included in staff materials tying the mayor’s annual increase to the same percentage increase given to general city employees.
During discussion members cited current Green Bay figures and nearby comparables presented in the packet: staff noted the city’s current mayoral salary was stated as about $102,000 and that Appleton’s mayor/administrator figures and others were in the packet. One committee member noted a recommended comparable target of about $120,000 (and that assuming 3% annual increases the figure could reach $127,000 by 2027); members asked staff to return with a clearer population-to-compensation comparison, confirmation whether comparables include full-time mayors or administrators, and benefits totals for apples-to-apples comparisons.
A motion to send the item back to staff for additional comparables and clarity passed unanimously. No change to salary was adopted at the meeting.
