Design team to present New Hanover High master plan options next month; board hears overview tonight

Assistant superintendent Rob Morgan gave a brief overview of the New Hanover High School master plan process and told the board the design team will present schematic options at the next regular meeting.
Morgan said stakeholder engagement has included a February public event at the Prince Street gym, meetings with students, staff, alumni, board members, county staff and commissioners. The design team is preparing multiple schematic approaches: building a new high school at a new site, renovating existing buildings, renovating and expanding on the current footprint, or renovating with potential campus expansion.
Morgan said the team’s current focus is on school and student safety, academic programming, operational efficiency and cost. He told the board the team and staff had returned to work on designs after receiving additional feedback from county commissioners and from recent stakeholder conversations. Morgan said the team expects to present detailed schematic options and cost information at the July board meeting and requested that the public expect the formal presentation at that time.
Board members urged staff to publish draft plans as soon as they were ready and reminded staff that draft documents are public records under state open‑meetings guidance. Several members also asked that the presentation materials be made available to the public in advance so residents can review options and provide feedback before the July presentation.
No vote was taken at the meeting; the board asked staff to continue design work, to publish materials when ready and to present the design team’s options at the next meeting.
