The Saint Louis Public Schools Board of Education on June 3 approved a memorandum of understanding with St. Louis City that allows the National Guard to use four district buildings as staging and debris-collection sites through June 13.
Board members said the agreement includes language holding agencies responsible for cleanup after they finish using district buildings. "I want to thank both the city and our administration for getting this together so quickly and being so thorough," said Board Member Conover.
Dr. Burishadeh, a district staff member who reviewed the MOU for the board, told trustees the agreement "lists the four buildings, and it lists the time frame regarding this specific project" and that the timeframe ends on June 13. She also said the MOU includes the obligation for agencies to restore or clean facilities after use.
Trustees discussed future, separate requests the city might make for additional spaces to provide services to displaced families, including on-site help to update driver's licenses and renew SNAP benefits. The board clarified that the sites used under this MOU will not be summer school buildings.
The board voted by roll call to approve the MOU. The motion passed with a unanimous vote of members present.
Board President Collins Adams thanked staff and city partners for moving quickly to put the agreement in place and to coordinate short-term recovery work for families affected by the recent tornado.
