Developers and proponents argued a Main‑street name would align the corridor with the city’s growth and provide marketing benefits. A public commenter, Wendy Green, said, “I think it's logical that Cedar City is growing south so, to call it South Main would probably be a good idea.”
Council members raised practical concerns. They pointed to address numbering, existing businesses that currently use Main Street addresses (including Maverik, Golden Corral and other roadway‑front businesses), and mapping inconsistencies in online services. Several councilors urged certified notice to businesses and property owners before any ordinance change, noting some businesses would likely bear administrative and branding costs from a name change.
Staff reported the roadway is primarily county‑owned and that the county would want to discuss the change with UDOT and property owners. Council members repeatedly emphasized the need to confirm which authority maintains each segment, to determine where Main Street formally begins and ends, and to identify whether address changes would produce conflicts (for example, duplicate “South Main” addresses along different corridors).
Council consensus was to postpone any action while staff coordinates with the county and UDOT and confirms that affected business owners have been notified. Council members requested proof of outreach and expressed a preference for extending the existing “Main Street” name rather than adding an awkward “South South Main” construct; staff will return with options that include formal notice to affected occupants and a report on address impacts.
The item will return for further consideration after the city obtains additional input from the county, UDOT and the property owners who would be directly affected by a renaming ordinance.
