Extension reports busy season, extension leaders outline midyear university cuts and local programming

Extension staff updated the Keith County Board of Commissioners on local programming this summer and on staffing and budget pressures at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension.

Extension educator Tessa Reese told the board that summer workshops and school enrichment programs are attracting strong participation; Reese also described new partnerships with the Kathleen Lute Library and Kids Oasis summer programs. The board approved the surplus of a corkboard from the extension office for storage and thanked staff for recent office improvements.

Brian (extension leadership) told commissioners that UNL/IANR required a midyear budget reduction and that extension absorbed a portion of the cut. He described county-level adjustments: leaving some positions open and using vacancies strategically so current services continue through July. He said the university’s longer-term structural budget gap remains under discussion with new university leadership and that extension leaders are meeting with university officials and the Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards on planning.

Commissioners praised local extension efforts and said they would continue to support the county’s extension programs. The board noted that extension educators in Keith County are being recognized for strong local engagement, including successful youth programs that bring students from neighboring counties.
