Summary

At the May 20 meeting the Jasper City Council authorized the mayor to execute an amended agreement clarifying that a prior economic development agreement with Mar Jacque provides a property tax abatement under Chapter 9B of Title 40, City Attorney Robson said.
Robson told the council that when Mar Jacque sought its property tax abatement, the revenue commissioner requested the original agreement and resolution explicitly reference Chapter 9B of Title 40 of the Code of Alabama. The amended agreement and resolution adopt the prior agreement but make clear the abatement is authorized under Chapter 9B.
Nut graf: The change is technical language requested by the state revenue commissioner to allow Mar Jacque to receive the agreed property tax abatement. Robson said the city and state have worked to align language and that the revised documents should enable the company to receive the 10-year abatement period described in the earlier agreement.
The council moved and approved authorization for the mayor to sign the revised agreement; the motion passed on a voice vote.
Discussion vs. decision: Discussion was procedural and legal—clarifying statutory citation to meet state tax office requirements—and the council's formal action was to authorize the mayor to execute the amended agreement so Mar Jacque can pursue the property tax abatement.
