WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Williamsburg-James City County Schools reviewed construction plans on June 4 for two preschool centers and a parking‑lot improvement at Berkeley Middle School and alerted the board to an imminent invitation for bid for the preschool construction.
Operations staff said the two new preschool buildings will each be approximately 41,200 square feet with 18 classrooms, restrooms, warming kitchens and administrative suites; the sites are at Norwich Elementary and Clara Byrd Baker Elementary. The division released project designs in 2023 and staff said the invitation for bid (IFB) was expected to be posted June 6 with award anticipated at the July 8 board meeting so construction could begin later in summer 2025; the target opening for the pre‑K centers is fall 2027.
Separately, the board reviewed a purchase request to Bay River Contracting LLC for Berkeley Middle School parking improvements using FY25 CIP funding. The scope includes site demolition, excavation and the installation of approximately 9,200 square feet of permeable pavers; the contract amount is $293,550 of a $300,000 FY25 appropriation.
Administration emphasized the IFB release is informational on June 4; the board will receive contracts for award at subsequent meetings. Board members asked about schedule and the fact that the pre‑K centers have moved into a later opening month than originally expected; staff confirmed the schedule drift and said the division hopes to begin construction after award and schedule a public groundbreaking when practical.
