Mayor updates aldermen on resurfacing, park projects and downtown redevelopment

At Highway 51/Arasco Road the mayor said a decorative brick retaining wall was removed for safety because some bricks were not tied properly; the city plans to reinstall a new decorative brick treatment including a limestone insert reading "Southaven" and a copper-look top.
The mayor said the city will host its largest Greenbrook softball tournament of the year with 54 teams coming from six states, and described it as a tourism draw. He also said construction of a skate park and bike track at Cherry Valley Park is scheduled to begin within weeks after design and contractor award. The city purchased the old Fred's building on Northwest Drive for court renovations and construction is underway.
On downtown redevelopment the mayor said McDonald's will return to its original 1975 location and described the change as significant to revitalizing the original business district. He also noted Dale's restaurant on Main Street has reopened under new ownership with renovations and full-week hours (11 a.m. to 8 p.m.). The mayor called the developments part of momentum rebuilding the city's original business district.
