The Tuscaloosa City Public Projects Committee approved a $51,150 contract with John Wayne Plumbing to replace 14 galvanized customer-side water service lines identified during an EPA-mandated inventory.
Brian (utility staff) told the committee that an inventory of roughly 55,000 service lines across the city identified 14 service lines with galvanized material “requiring replacement.” He said customers were notified, three quotes were obtained, and John Wayne Plumbing submitted the lowest bid; the work will be funded from 2022A bond funding.
Committee members asked whether the replacements were the city’s responsibility or the property owner’s. Brian said the replacements are on the customer side of the meter and that the requirement stems from the EPA’s lead and copper rule; he added the city is ultimately responsible if a property owner chooses not to perform the replacement. “We are ultimately responsible, for this if the citizen chooses not to do it,” Brian said.
Members asked whether the locations were concentrated; Brian said they were generally in older parts of town. The committee approved the contract after a motion and second; the vote was recorded by voice as “aye.”
