At a community-access program in Missoula, professional artists described practical strategies for negotiating rates and choosing projects.
One panelist said he typically states his standard rate up front and begins negotiations above his expected price to leave room to move down if appropriate. “I normally, quote them higher just to see,” he said, describing a negotiation strategy that protects his time value.
Panelists also said artists should evaluate a project’s content and their personal interests before agreeing: if an artist dislikes the subject matter or expects to spend a year drawing content they do not enjoy, that mismatch is a valid reason to decline. Conversely, writers who can pay even modest page rates are more likely to secure committed artists and better quality.
The speakers recommended that writers and artists be explicit about schedules, deliverables and payment terms and to prefer direct voice conversations to align expectations before work begins.
