During a public program hosted by Missoula Community Access Television, panelists offered guidance for writers and artists seeking collaborators in comics.
Panelists said writers should be succinct in pitches, follow each publisher’s submission guidelines and, where possible, present finished or near-finished pages rather than an idea alone. One artist said he prefers a phone or Skype conversation to understand tone and money before committing.
Speakers advised writers who cannot pay full rates to nevertheless offer clear creative collaboration and modest compensation. “If you’re working with somebody and it’s you're not paying them, let them collaborate,” one presenter said, recommending shared creative input when financial compensation is low.
The panel also recommended researching an artist’s existing work before approaching them, and advised artists and writers to develop personal relationships with editors when possible. For creators seeking exposure, the speakers suggested conventions, targeted social media and consistent output as the most practical routes to visibility.
