County postpones stage-curtain purchase after contractors cite rigging work and inspection fee

Jones County commissioners on June 3 postponed action on replacing the courthouse stage curtains after staff said available bids indicated additional rigging work and inspection costs.
Staff reported an out-of-state vendor had provided a quote of about $170,500 for curtains and related work. A second potential supplier, Georgia Stage Curtains, required a $1,500 on-site fee to inspect ceiling rigging before issuing a firm quote because the supplier said existing rigging may not meet current code to support new curtain weight.
The board heard that a local contractor who previously did curtain work told staff he was no longer in the curtain business. Staff also said the replacement will likely trigger related purchases, including a new screen and projector estimated at roughly $5,000. One commissioner recommended postponing to ensure bids are “apples to apples” in curtain weight and rigging specifications before awarding work.
A motion to postpone the purchase and seek further information and competing quotes was made, seconded and carried. Commissioners asked staff to pursue additional quotes and to compare rigging requirements, potential ceiling access needs (lift or scaffolding) and total project cost before returning with a recommendation.
