Mayor announces $50,000 grant to staff neighborhood playgrounds this summer

City officials announced the recreation department will staff five neighborhood playgrounds this summer with adult attendants, funded by a $50,000 grant obtained through Senator Fahey.
The mayor said the grant will support attendants at Searchie, Arnold Ave, Esperanza Verde, Barkley and Veterans Park playgrounds. The attendants are planned to be on duty four hours per day (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.), five days per week, and to run age-appropriate activities such as arts and crafts, physical activities and music for elementary-age children. The mayor said the program is intended to provide supervised, neighborhood-based options for children who cannot attend the centralized summer camp or travel to more remote youth program locations.
Council members added that the school district is planning field-based programming at the four diamonds for older children and that some sites will also distribute free meals through New York State vendors and other partners. Staff said final staffing and program details will be announced after recruitment and scheduling are complete.
Council members and staff framed the program as filling a gap in supervision and access for neighborhood children over the summer; they thanked Senator Fahey for securing the funding.
