Commissioners unanimously proclaim June as Alzheimer’s Awareness, Immigrant Heritage, Gun Violence Awareness and LGBTQ Pride months

The Dallas County Commissioners Court on June 25 unanimously approved proclamations recognizing June as Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, National Immigrant Heritage Month, National Gun Violence Awareness Day (recognized locally on the first Friday in June) and LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Commissioner Elba Garcia read the Alzheimer’s resolution; Imelda Aguirre of the Alzheimer’s Association (Dallas and Northeast Texas) was on hand to accept the proclamation and noted prevention and caregiver resources the organization provides. Garcia also led a proclamation honoring immigrant heritage; representatives from the City of Dallas Office of Equity and Inclusion, including Adriana Portillo and Isabel Camacho, accepted the recognition and promoted local citizenship workshops and partnership efforts.

For Gun Violence Awareness Day the court adopted a proclamation and heard from volunteers with Moms Demand Action and from Be SMART/Everytown representatives who urged responsible gun storage and community violence intervention. Miriam Sharma of Moms Demand Action and Mary Carrie Peterson (Be SMART for Kids—Dallas) stressed distributing gun locks and local prevention efforts. Christina Smith, assistant chief with Dallas ISD police, thanked the court for the recognition and urged continued outreach.

The court also declared June Pride Month and received statements from Dallas County District Attorney’s Office LGBTQ+ task‑force members and local nonprofit leaders. Speakers highlighted ongoing legislative threats cited in the proclamation and described local efforts by the DA’s office and community groups to improve cultural competency and support LGBTQ+ youth and residents.

All proclamations carried with an audible “aye” and were recorded as approved by the court.
