The Amsterdam Common Council on May 20 approved a budget transfer to fund the emergency demolition of a dangerously deteriorated building on Elk Street.
Council members and the fire chief described the structure as actively collapsing with falling bricks and an immediate public‑safety hazard. The council approved moving funds into the city’s demolition line so work can begin as soon as utility disconnection is complete.
The chief said the building was “in danger of ... falling down” and described the situation as an “active collapse right now.” A council member added that National Grid must disconnect the gas service; the work was expected to start after that disconnection, and council members said demolition crews would begin with emergency demolition once utilities are secured.
The resolution authorizing the transfer passed on a roll call vote.
