Amsterdam donates 1997 fire engine to regional BOCES for firefighter training

The Amsterdam Common Council on May 20 approved a resolution to donate a 1997 Salisbury fire engine (Engine 3) to the Hamilton‑Fulton‑Montgomery (HFM) Board of Cooperative Educational Services for use in a new firefighter training program.
Council members said the used truck historically fetches less than $5,000 at auction and that donating the apparatus would support hands‑on training for regional students and prospective firefighters.
Dimeza, director of the BOCES program, told the council the gift will improve hands‑on training for juniors and seniors enrolled at the regional career and technical center and help cultivate local workers: “there’s substantial need for firefighters within our regional volunteer and paid” ranks and the equipment “is gonna be a a substantial improvement for us, and for our students.”
Mayor and council members praised the partnership and said the donation will be placed on the BOCES board of education agenda for final acceptance. The resolution cites New York State Finance Law §167 as the authority for donating surplus municipal property.
The council voted by roll call with aye votes recorded and the resolution carried.
