Climate Smart Kingston members reviewed recent outreach events and upcoming diversion programs at the May 28 meeting.
Earth Fare recap: Staff said the Earth Fare event earlier in the month attracted an estimated 2,000 attendees. The commission reported diversion including approximately 1.5 dump trucks of e‑waste, 44 refrigerant‑containing appliances, roughly 60 banker‑boxes of paper for shredding, and 63 people used a shuttle bus to the event. The commission also said the event drew repeat visitors from outside the immediate area and that several volunteers and partners contributed to its apparent success.
Paint‑recycling drive: The commission noted a paint‑recycling event organized with Green Sheen has 452 registered cars so far; Green Sheen staff indicated capacity for 800 vehicles. The commission said the paint collection is funded through NYSERDA for this community event and noted plans to quantify diverted paint volumes after the event.
Members discussed outreach coordination, poster distribution issues from the Earth Fare debrief and suggested earlier lead times and clearer volunteer commitments for next year. They also said climate program branding was widely visible at events and that post-event counts and tonnage measures will be prepared.
Members asked for more volunteers to staff upcoming events and asked staff to circulate event materials and registration links via the commission email list and social media.
