The Finance and Audit Committee approved a resolution to transfer $263,000 from a pending Dormitory Authority grant to a motor-vehicle account, contingent on the grant award, so the Fire/EMS department can acquire a new ambulance.
The Fire Chief told the committee the grant would fund a “brand new ambulance” equipped with a power load and ALS (advanced life support) outfitting and that he hoped to have the vehicle in service by mid- to late summer if the grant is finalized. “We plan on purchasing a vehicle, a desperately needed vehicle, off the lot,” the Chief said, describing the award as the final step in the state approval process and emphasizing the department’s operational need.
Committee members asked whether the vehicle would be gas or diesel (Chief: gas) and whether there was a local match (Chief: no match required). The resolution approved a transfer contingent on the grant award; the committee chair called the vote and members voiced assent. The department said adding the new unit would increase frontline ALS capacity and provide a spare when other ambulances are out of service for repair.
