Commission authorizes chairman to sign support letters for ADECA broadband applicants

Lee County commissioners authorized the chairman to sign letters of support for two internet service providers applying for Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) broadband grants targeted at unserved and underserved areas.
Miss Leverett told the commission two providers plan to apply to the ADECA Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program (application deadline recently extended): AT&T and Public Service Telephone Company. She said the grants are limited to designated unserved and underserved census blocks shown on the county map and that letters of support would accompany the companies’ applications.
"We have time now for you all to sign letters of support for these companies to put with their applications," Leverett said. Commissioners discussed the map key noting which areas are marked unserved or underserved, and several commissioners expressed support for anything that would extend Internet coverage in Lee County.
A motion to allow the chairman to sign letters of support was seconded and passed by unanimous vote. The commission did not discuss committing county funding to any proposed projects; the authorization was limited to signing support letters.
