Northern Lebanon SD board hears summer construction schedule; weight room open to students

The Northern Lebanon School District board of directors heard details June 3 about a heavy summer construction schedule that will limit building access and require specific life-safety work before occupancy can resume.
District Superintendent Dr. Gary Messinger said the work will concentrate in the science and teen halls and include replacement of an old curtain wall behind the greenhouse and extended gym floor work. The construction team expects significant portions of the building to be inaccessible while life-safety systems are repaired; "our codes enforcement takes away our occupancy permit, and we only earn it back once the life safety features are back in place," a facilities staff member said.
The board was told the gym-floor project began in early June but will take multiple weeks, including padding, layered subfloor work, wood installation and multiple seal coats. Messinger said the district expects flooring work to be complete by August from a flooring standpoint but cautioned other work will remain. "Even though it started, it's not close to being done yet," the facilities staff member said.
The district negotiated summer access to the weight room for coaches and students. Messinger said coaches may schedule sessions and that there will be an open-staffed period: "It's open gym for any student," he said, and confirmed the most common scheduled window will be weekday mornings roughly 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The district said it has opened the room to coaches to schedule daily sessions during the summer.
Board members asked about who may use the weight room; Messinger confirmed it is open to any student during scheduled open hours and that coaches may also schedule additional sessions. He also noted that working during the summer is important because many construction tasks cannot be done while students are in the building.
The board did not take a formal vote on construction planning at the June 3 meeting; updates and potential change orders were discussed later in the meeting.
