Presenters said this year’s eight awards are $2,000 each and listed recipients and their affiliations: William Gates III (son of retired Capt. Bill Gates, plans to attend Angelina College); Landon Greer (son of Capt. Brett Dew, plans to attend Blinn Community College); Leah Valdez (daughter of firefighter Luis Valdez, plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin); and Danica Watson (daughter of Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Watson, plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State University). Four recipients were not present: Natalie Murray, Kaylin Parrish, Camden Sal and Riley Whitley.
The presenters told the council the scholarship fund was established by two firefighters in the late 1990s and is funded primarily by voluntary payroll contributions from active Lufkin firefighters. Since inception, including the current recipients, presenters said approximately $83,000 has been distributed to 59 students.
"Thank you, Chiefs," a council member said after the presentation.
City council members offered congratulations to the recipients and wished them well in their studies. No formal action was required or taken by the council on the scholarships during the meeting.
