West Melbourne approved a one-year law enforcement dispatch services agreement with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office on June 3 for $142,500.
Chief Vesta said the agreement is the same as past years except for the dollar amount and that "the only change from previous year's agreements is the dollar amount." The estimated increase was about 5 percent; last year’s increase had been roughly 3 percent. Chief Vesta recommended approval.
Council discussion focused on the automatic-renewal clause and whether the city or BCSO had previously invoked the 180‑day notice to cancel. Councilmember Adams asked whether either party had ever used the cancellation clause; Chief Vesta said he was not aware of any prior cancellations and explained the long notice period is intended to allow the county to staff a dispatch channel properly.
Councilmember Bentley asked whether other nearby cities provide their own dispatch; Chief Vesta said Palm Bay and Melbourne operate their own dispatch centers and the sheriff’s office handles some municipal dispatching. He estimated creating a 24/7 municipal dispatch would cost "probably 4 to $500,000 minimum," plus startup equipment, making the county agreement more cost-effective.
Action: Councilmember Frampus moved and Councilmember Gaylord seconded approval of the FY 2025–26 dispatch agreement; the motion passed 6-0.
