Commissioners Allocate $5,000 to Support World Elder Abuse Awareness Events

The Jackson County Commission approved a $5,000 allocation to support World Elder Abuse Awareness Month activities and gift packages for nursing-home and group-home residents.
Commissioner Rocky McBride introduced the request and described plans to visit three nursing homes and two group homes during June, providing hygiene items, refreshments and activities to residents. ‘‘So now we have had some a lot a number of stuff donated... we kinda plan for about $5,000. If we spend $10 per head to try to get those soap,’’ McBride said.
McBride and Commissioner Kenimer each offered $2,500 from their discretionary funds to cover remaining costs after donations; the commission set aside the rules and approved the transfers on a voice vote. Money will be routed through the Council on Aging (COA) for distribution to the programs and facilities referenced by county staff.
Staff said donations of soap, lotion and hats have already been arranged with local churches and volunteers; commissioners asked staff to provide a donation wish list for broader community solicitation. The commission recorded no further conditions on the funding.
