The Jackson County Commission voted to approve a $15,000 expenditure to contract a temporary nurse from Southern Health Partners to assist with medication dispensing at the Jackson County Jail.
Chief Corrections Deputy Hal Nash told commissioners the jail’s nursing workload rose in May, with 68 inmates in custody and 48 on special medications; that workload has left the on-site nurse without time to handle sick-call visits. ‘‘We have a contract the county does with Southern Health Partners that is an annual contract. We've run into so many more inmates requiring so much more special needs,’’ Nash said.
Nash asked the commission to move $15,000 from jail cash-on-hand to pay Southern Health Partners for nurse time through the end of the fiscal year. Commissioners first voted to set aside the rules and then approved the transfer and temporary hire; the action was carried by voice vote.
Commissioners and staff clarified the payment mechanism would be a transfer from jail cash on hand and that the contracted nurse would work alongside the jail’s nurse to handle medication dispensing only. The contract with Southern Health Partners remains the county’s annual provider for jail health services.
