Board approves design task order to repair Twelfth Street lift station wet well

The Vienna Utility Board approved a task order to design bidding and construction work on the Twelfth Street lift station wet well after staff reported concrete in the access landing was failing.
Staff described a hole in the concrete landing at the wet well stairs and recommended removing the concrete and reshaping the landing to allow safe access. Mike, staff engineer, said the design will “take out that concrete and come back in with a grading, so it can still be accessed if necessary.” Craig, public works staff, told the board he wanted the job bid for construction following the design phase.
Engineering staff said the planned repair would include attachment of a metal grate or an aluminum structure to the wet-well walls in lieu of replacing the concrete landing, and that the aluminum option typically performs well in that environment. One board member said the construction cost was expected to be about $25,000.
A motion to approve the task order for design and bidding of the Twelfth Street Lift Station repair was made and carried by voice vote; the chair announced the vote was unanimous.
Board members asked clarifying questions about access near Grand Central and the influence of historic elevations; engineers said the design intent is to restore a uniform bottom and side slope so routine maintenance crews can manage the channel and preserve capacity.
