City to seek 120-day extension on first batch of nuisance-property demolitions

Thomas (city staff) said the city had completed an initial learning process in the first batch and that asbestos and lead testing were needed to determine whether structures could be demolished in-house or required licensed contractors. Where no hazardous materials exist, staff said the city’s crews could perform demolitions in-house; where hazardous materials are present, the city will advertise bids for contract work. Staff said some demolition work could begin as early as the following week, and the 120-day extension is sought to provide adequate time to complete work or secure contractor bids for structures requiring abatement.
