Commission tables trial balance after members spot negative carry on employee health insurance
Summary
Commissioners tabled acceptance of the May trial balance to get an explanation about a negative monthly balance on employee health insurance; staff said a $250,000 supplemental deposit was approved in April and the deficit (about $49,078) will carry into FY‑26 but be cleared by appropriations.

The Norfolk County Commission voted May 28 to table consideration of the May trial balance after commissioners identified a negative monthly balance tied to employee health insurance.
A commissioner noted a negative $49,078 showing under group insurance on the monthly trial balance and asked whether that was a red flag. County staff and the treasurer’s office explained that employee health insurance ran deficient earlier in fiscal 2025, that a supplemental appropriation approved in April included a $250,000 deposit to offset the shortfall, and that the remaining negative figure would be carried into fiscal 2026 and cleared by appropriations.
Seeking a written explanation, the commission moved and seconded a motion to table the trial balance until the following week; the roll‑call vote to table was recorded as unanimous.
