The Kent City Council held a public hearing and voted to apply for the Ohio Community Housing Impact and Preservation (CHIP) grant program, which makes up to $250,000 available to eligible cities for owner-occupied single-family housing rehabilitation.
City staff said the program covers substantial repairs “from basement to roof,” that the city has been operating a rehabilitation program and currently maintains a waiting list. Bridget (city staff) told the council that prior CHIP awards had been used along with revolving loan repayments to complete five projects in the last funding cycle and that typical rehab costs average $85,000–$95,000 per home, meaning the capped $250,000 would support a limited number of full rehabs in the city.
Council voted to authorize submission of the grant application (submission deadline June 25) and to appropriate funds if the grant is awarded. City staff said the award notification typically follows the state review cycle and that the application was on an accelerated calendar for this round.
