McFarland High students give year-end report highlighting traditions, athletics and college plans

McFarland High School students delivered a year-end report to the McFarland School District Board of Education on items ranging from senior traditions and student-created children’s books to spring athletics and scholarship recognition.
The students said this year’s seniors paraded through district elementary and intermediate schools in caps and gowns on May 30, a tradition several students described as meaningful for younger pupils who look up to older students. “It made a big impression,” a student presenter said of the parade.
The presentation summarized recent and upcoming activities at McFarland High School (MHS). Students reported on a project in which English 11 juniors created children’s books and visited younger students to read them; a new “senior sunset” celebration scheduled for June 4 from 7 to 9 p.m.; and a commencement ceremony set for 11 a.m. on June 8. Students also thanked staff and volunteers for supporting events and traditions.
On athletics, the students listed WIAA qualifiers and season results. Named scholar-athlete recognitions included Isaac Ewing and Julia Eckley; the presentation noted both will continue collegiate athletics at UW–La Crosse and Minnesota State Mankato, respectively. Track and field qualifiers listed for the state meet included Julia Ackley (hurdles, pole vault), Rachel Kiel (high jump, long jump) and others; boys qualifiers included relay and distance competitors such as Isaac Ewing. The report summarized softball, lacrosse, baseball, soccer, golf and tennis results and upcoming regional match dates in early June.
Students noted other district activities such as author visits, field trips to the Aldo Leopold Center, student art displays and senior interviews conducted as part of district programming. They advised the board that the student-run program Connect will not run next year under the same group but that student council plans to take on related activities, pending coordination with staff.
Board members thanked the student presenters for providing perspective on school events. The board did not take formal action on items in the student report; the presentation was informational.
The student presenters closed with gratitude to the board and staff for the year and wished everyone a good summer.
