Auburn schedules resident-only cleanup day; council discusses green waste options with Recology franchise in mind

The Auburn City Council on June 2 heard city manager remarks about an upcoming resident-only cleanup day on June 7 and discussed options for green-waste pickup under the city’s franchise agreement with Recology.
City Manager Mitchell told the council that cleanup day is limited to Auburn residents, that Recology is partnering with the city and that each household is allowed a one-cubic-yard limit for pickup. He said items cannot be longer than three feet or heavier than 40 pounds and that bulky items such as furniture, refrigerators and hazardous materials are excluded. He also reported that burn season was suspended May 22 and that staff will present the proposed FY 2025–26 budget to council next week.
Councilmembers asked whether a curbside green-waste pickup option could be added to reduce the likelihood residents place green waste in the trash. A staff representative said Recology currently provides a two-cubic-yard pass that residents can use at Recology facilities but that curbside green-waste pickup for all residents would require negotiation within the franchise agreement. Staff said the city is discussing a possible two-year extension of the franchise agreement, which would provide an opportunity to negotiate additional services.
Separately, the city manager reported the council had authorized fireworks contracts for the July 4 show at the Gold Country Fairgrounds and that fundraising had reached about $13,000 toward a $21,000 target. No formal council action on changing Recology service terms was taken at the meeting; staff said they will investigate options and discuss them during franchise negotiations and at future meetings.
