Public commenters at Auburn’s June 2 council meeting reported that the Placer County Board of Supervisors voted 4–1 to extend a contract allowing further work on the DeWitt project, a proposed arts and multiuse community center. Eric Chun, who spoke during public comment, said the board approved the extension and that project organizers have 12 months to prepare a detailed plan.
Chun said the board passed the extension without receiving all documents at the hearing and that the project team is revising plans, funding systems and organizational structure. He said organizers will return to the Board of Supervisors with an updated plan within 12 months and hope to secure additional support from the city, including possible letters of support from the City Council.
Council members and staff expressed support for receiving more details. Councilmembers noted the project’s arts and community benefits and the DeWitt Center’s historical role providing medical services to wounded service members during World War II. Chun said a new project team is consolidating accounts and strategy to preserve arts uses and support multiuse operations.
No formal council action on the DeWitt project was taken at the June 2 meeting; the report came during public comment and organizers said they will seek city support at a future date.
