Auburn youth commission outlines 2024–25 activities, holds senior prom as service project

The Auburn Youth Advisory Commission presented its first-year overview to the City Council on June 2, highlighted a senior prom community-service project at the Auburn Senior Center and announced application dates for the 2025–26 commission.
Asher Thompson, a seventh grader from Sky Ridge School speaking for the commission, said the body was reestablished Aug. 12, 2024, to advise the council on youth needs and to promote youth involvement in local government. Commission members described goals including advocacy, community engagement, youth empowerment and a commitment to at least one community service project each year.
Cora Bourgeault, an eighth grader, described the commission’s senior prom project: commission members organized the event at the Auburn Senior Center to connect youth and seniors; the commission thanked donors including the Auburn Union Teachers Association, Kidsapalooza and Serena Lasko Photography. Commissioners reported approximately 20 seniors and about a dozen youth participated; they also showed photos and a thank-you note from the senior center.
The commission said applications for the 2025–26 youth commissioners are due June 6, with appointments on June 23; meetings are planned for the first Thursday of each month after school resumes. Council members praised the students’ work, noted staff support was limited and said the commission had run efficiently with minimal staff burden. The council presented recognition certificates to commissioners in attendance.
