The Becker County board approved a $32,713 repair to the eddy-current rotor at the county’s materials recovery facility. County staff explained the MRF uses the eddy-current separator to recover non-ferrous metals, principally aluminum; sale of separated aluminum is a significant revenue source for the recycling program.
Staff said the facility keeps a spare rotor but needed to send one unit for refurbishment after a bearing failure. Commissioners heard the cost of repair is substantially less than buying a new separator (staff noted a replacement would be on the order of several hundred thousand dollars). The board approved the repair to restore full operating capacity at the MRF and limit revenue loss while staff continues regular preventive maintenance and capital planning for future equipment needs.
County staff said the eddy-current unit has generated significant annual revenue historically, and that repairing the unit represents a cost-effective way to preserve operations. The board instructed staff to include MRF capital-replacement planning in the county’s ongoing capital program discussions.
