Commissioners, staff say Zimmerman roundabouts and bridge work require clearer detour communication after missed signage

Sherburne County commissioners and public works staff discussed problems and public complaints arising from concurrent construction projects in Zimmerman and steps being taken to improve detour signing and communications.

Public works said two roundabouts are under construction in Zimmerman and that a staging and detour plan initially lacked adequate signing; staff acknowledged constituents’ complaints and said county crews and project managers corrected signing and worked with business owners to reduce disruption. Andrew (public works) told the board the department will continue outreach to local business owners and try to post closures at least seven days in advance when possible.

Commissioners said the clustering of projects — roundabouts in Zimmerman plus other projects such as a County Road 15 bridge replacement — constrains detour options and increases the importance of clear public notices. Staff noted they are using changeable message boards, social media and direct engagement with business owners; they also said they will explore providing construction and detour information to mapping apps where feasible so routing services can reflect closures.

The board asked staff to keep the county website and social channels current and to continue coordination with contractors to keep work moving; staff said they would also pursue tighter coordination with mapping vendors to help drivers navigate detours.
