Beresford schedules special meeting to canvass vote on zoning change for three lots

Beresford’s City Council scheduled a special meeting for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, to canvass the results of a June 3 special election on an ordinance to amend the city’s zoning ordinance and rezone Lots 10, 11 and 12 in Block 24.

The measure on the June 3 ballot asks voters whether to change the city ordinance to rezone those lots; a “yes” vote would enact the rezoning, while a “no” vote would leave the city ordinance unchanged and keep the parcels zoned single-family. The city notified residents that polling for the special election will be held at the public library from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3.

City officials characterized the June 4 meeting as a routine canvass of election returns; the council will formally review and certify results at that time. The item was presented under the meeting’s discussion and information section and the council advised that the canvass is open to the public.

Residents with questions about the ballot language, polling place, or the canvass time were directed to city offices before the election. The council did not take further action on the rezoning during the regular meeting; its next explicit step is the scheduled special meeting to review the certified returns.

If the council certifies a majority “yes” vote at the June 4 canvass, the ordinance amending the Beresford zoning ordinance will be reflected in the city’s zoning map and code as of the effective date stated in the adopted ordinance.
