Town of Clayton meeting participants reviewed a draft downtown banner program and discussed sign design, placement on existing utility poles, sponsorship panels and next steps for pricing and installation.
The presenters described a vertical banner with a primary “Welcome to Clayton” panel at the top, two or more smaller directional rings beneath it and a lower sponsorship panel. They proposed using existing light or utility poles in the historic downtown and noted some poles already display veteran banners. Participants said banners should be placed to be visible from both directions on main streets and that sponsorships could offset costs.
The group flagged several implementation details: hardware and material choices, the visible width and height of lower panels (discussed at 4–8 inches as an option), wear on fiberglass support rods, and whether vendor pricing includes printing. The presenter said vendor catalog pricing started at about $7 per unit but that printing and hardware typically add cost; they had emailed the vendor for pricing on an initial order of a dozen banners. Participants discussed using Duke Energy poles where permitted and matching banner materials across all posts to ensure consistent appearance.
Members discussed sponsorship placement and how businesses such as D and D Auto might prefer different pole locations for visibility. The presenter said the program could scale depending on how many businesses sponsor banners; more sponsors would allow more poles to be outfitted. They also asked other meeting participants to confirm preferred pole locations and to do field reconnaissance to validate visibility.
Next steps included completing vendor pricing, confirming the set of poles to be used, deciding a final banner size and hardware level that accounts for expected wear, and circulating a cost proposal to potential sponsors. The presenter said they would forward vendor information to the group once received and bring a proposal back to the commission for finalization.
