House approves renaming bridge for Lance Corporal Michael W. Hanks

Representative Wolford, sponsor of the bill, described Lance Corporal Hanks as a Marine Corps veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and a Silver Star recipient who was killed in action on Nov. 17, 2004, in Anbar province, Iraq. "By his bold leadership, wise judgment and complete dedication to duty, Lance Corporal Hanks reflected great credit upon himself and the Marine Corps," Wolford said, reading from the medal citation and urging support for the bill.
Wolford invited Melissa Hanks, Lance Corporal Hanks's sister and founder of the Michael W. Hanks Legacy Foundation, to the floor; he noted the foundation's work to connect Gold Star families and veterans through educational initiatives and community outreach. The House approved the bill on a recorded roll call of 108-0, and members ordered immediate effect.
The bill would rename the specified bridge under the Michigan Memorial Highway Act; no appropriation or installation schedule for signage was detailed on the floor. Representative Wolford urged colleagues to support the measure to honor Hanks's service in his hometown area.
